The Dream

An idea began to germinate in my mind after the NYC marathon. What if I tried to run a marathon on each of the seven continents? It was a big “What If”. I was not sure how feasible this was. As I was thinking about it, I chanced upon this quote by Mark Twain:

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

That was it! I worked towards realising this dream and have juggled work and personal commitments to train and complete marathons in four continents thus far, Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. In 2013, I will attempt to complete this feat by running marathons on the three remaining continents - Africa (Marrakech, Morocco on 27 January 2013), South America (Rio de Janeiro on 7 July 2013) and last but certainly not the least, Antarctica (Antarctic Ice Marathon on 20 November 2013).

I am dedicating this effort to my late-grandmother who played an important role in bringing me up. Ah Ma (how I used to call her) was a determined and strong lady and she imparted these values to me through her strict discipline and no-nonsense approach. Ah Ma passed away in 1997 at the age of 87 years old. 15 years down the road, I still miss her dearly. Without her, I would not be who I am today.
